An unexploded grenade was discovered Thursday evening in a riverbed near a park trail in Waimea.

Hawai‘i Police Department officers from South Kohala responded to the park after a resident reported finding the unexploded ordnance and immediately closed off the surrounding area to prevent pedestrian traffic.

Members of the Hawai‘i Island Bomb Squad conferred with members of the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and it was determined the grenade was not a threat.

Hawai‘i Island Bomb Squad secured the grenade in a reinforced bomb disposal container and it was subsequently removed from the riverbed and away from public access.
